When it comes to air travel, Africa is growing very fast and having some of the top tourist destinations in the world means that there will be tourists flocking in throughout the year; and this will keep the airports very busy since not all of the countries are next to the oceans.

It is important to note that the growth of air travel in Africa has risen a notch higher than it was decades back. Several countries are now more stable than they were before creating the need for well developed structures that can facilitate travel through and out of country.

There are countries whose structural development has skyrocketed due to so many different factors that affect their economies compared to others who are still lagging behind. And in no particular order, here are some of the busiest airports in the continent.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

The busiest airport in East Africa racks in an estimated 5 million passengers coming and going through its terminals in a year. JKIA is located in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya the leading business hub in the East and Central Africa.

Marrakech Menara Airport

Located in the capital city of Morocco Marrakech, the airport serves international passengers especially from the neighbouring Arab countries and from Casablanca, one of the biggest cities in North Africa. The number of passengers using the airport during 2014 was estimated to be over 4 million.

OR Tambo International Airport

Formally known as Johannesburg International, the airport located in Johannesburg South Africa is the largest and biggest airport in Africa with over an estimated 28 million passengers passing through its doors in a year. The airport has six terminals serving to several non-stop international and domestic flights.

Murtala Muhammed International Airport

The busy airport is said to handle an estimate of 6 million passengers and is the biggest in the region. The airport is located in Lagos, that is easily mistaken for being the capital city of Nigeria due to its commercial strength in the country.

Cairo International Airport

Ranked as the second busiest airport in Africa after OR Tambo International it handles an estimate of over 16 million passengers in a year. Located in Cairo, Egypt; the airport is also ranked among one of the most beautiful airports on the continent.

Carthage International Airport

The airport is named after and located West of the history- filled seaside city of Carthage in Tunis, Tunisia and serves over 4 million passengers both international and domestic.

Mohammed V International Airport

Over an estimate of 7 million passengers pass through this airport and it is ranked among the top ten well designed airports with good service in Africa. The airport  is located in the city of Casablanca in Morocco.

Hurghada International Airport

Located inland southwest of the city where it derives its name, the airport serves over 5 million travellers. It is located in Egypt.

Houari Boumediene Airport

Sometimes referred to as Algiers Airport by Algerians, the airport serves over 6 million passenger annually.

Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport

This international airport serves over 6 million people as of 2014 and is located in the capital city of Abuja in Nigeria.
