On Wednesday August 28th, Uganda Airlines official flagship carrier launched its first commercial flight from Entebbe International Airport at exactly 6am for destination Juba, South Sudan arriving at 9:45am where it was welcomed with a water salute. This comes after the inaugural flight that took off from Entebbe International Airport to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi Kenya on August 27th 2019 flown by all Uganda Crew led by Chief Pilot Michael Etyang and Captain Lukeman Ndusa.
The Airlines currently operates bombardier CRJ 900 fleet on its regional routes and an additional two aircraft will join its fleet later in October which will facilitate route expansion to Southern Africa, Central Africa and DRC. The carrier is also expected to receive 2 Airbus A330 wide body aircraft to serve on the long-haul routes to ME, Asia and Europe.
Speaking at the launch of commercial flights, Jenifer Bamuturaki, Commercial Director Uganda Airlines said, “As a national airline, we are glad to finally be able to fly after a long-awaited commencement of commercial operations. So much has gone into getting us here, the pilots, engineers, management, ministry of Works and transport, Ministry of Finance, our diplomatic missions to designated destinations and other stakeholders have worked tirelessly to make this a reality. Now we can proudly say, Uganda finally has a national carrier.”
“I specifically want to thank H.E the President of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for championing this cause and giving the green light for the starting of the Airline. With this Airline, Ugandans can now travel conveniently within the region and will soon be able to travel to other destinations out of Africa when we receive our Airbus A330 Aircraft in 2020” She added.
She further added that the first official flight to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport was a positive one as onboard capacity had considerable numbers.
Wednesday Juba flight had a total of eight passengers as the airline prospects to have onboard numbers grow on the next flights the airline will partake.
Passengers contemplating traveling with the Airlines will also have to book for their boarding tickets from nearby travel agents and online on the Uganda airlines website http://www.ugandairlines.com so as to have their seats reserved.
The Airline is expected to operate to Nairobi, Juba, Dar es Salaam and Mogadishu, starting Wednesday August 28th and Bujumbura, Kilimanjaro on 13 September 2019.
Currently, Uganda Airlines is also offering promotional fares to all its current route network for a period of two months. This will give the public a chance to test the product at relatively affordable fares compared to what is currently charged by competition and will offer direct flights to all its destinations reducing flight time. The Airline is also visible across all Global Distribution systems.
