Minister urges drivers to stay safe and healthy as SafeBoda launches free medical camp

On Tuesday, Safe Boda launched its first ever weeklong free health camp that will take place upto Saturday 29th February.

This year’s health camp dubbed ‘’Obulamu bwo bwe bugaga bwo’’ will see upto 15,000 SafeBoda drivers, their families and friends as well as ordinary drivers and residents of Kyebando and neighbouring areas receive free medical services including; diagnosis, treatment and medical services plus counselling.



The five day event hosted at the SafeBoda Academy in Kyebando, near Tambus and the activities was officiated by the Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Hon. Betty Namugwanya as she urged drivers to stay healthy, safe and sound mind.

She said, ‘’It’s important for our SafeBoda drivers to keep a healthy life because un an healthy person is un an productive person, so it’s important for these drivers to live a good healthy life while they do their work. At KCCA, we share responsibilities for Public Safety and public transport, in that case, we today, laud SafeBoda for taking the Boda Boda industry to the next level and also digitizing the industry, we previously knew boda boda riders as people who do funny work but today, we can witness developed industry overtime.

She further revealed, ‘’Due to the high population growth, we are grappling with high youth unemployment and therefore thank SafeBoda for creating numerous employment for both educated and the un educated, I also laud SafeBoda for their continued commitment to improve not only Safety in Kampala but also improve the livelihood and wellbeing of SafeBoda drivers.’’

The Minister concluded by calling for continuous dialogue between the Government agencies and transport hailing companies like SafeBoda.

UNFPA Representative in Uganda, Alain Sibenaler said, ‘’Investing in youth is key for countries like Uganda, therefore investing in health, education and protection is the future of any economy. Am happy with the partnerships we have had with SafeBoda as our key stakeholder. Today, UNFPA and SafeBoda with support from partners have employed over 15,000 riders in the City of Kampala alone.

Ricky Rapa Thomson, the SafeBoda Co-Founder said that, ‘’Training is key to increasing the number of safe trips in all African cities, but even more importantly, is having a healthy community of drivers. Our partners have played a great role in giving life to this initiative and we thank them for positively responding to our call to bring these services closer to our SafeBodas. We also thank the Kyebando community and the leadership for accepting us and nurturing us even as we nurtured our business.’’

Shakib Nsubuga, the innovations Manager at SafeBoda said,  ‘’Our SafeBodas spend at least 90% of their time working, and hardly invest time in health-related issues, We believe that this Camp will help close the access gap to these crucial medical services and create more positive health outcomes for our drivers and our community at large. The Kyebando community is really our home so we are encouraging Kyebando residents to come and utilize the services. Health, really is wealth and we must invest in in it.’’
