30 June, 2016, Bulange Mengo, Uganda- Airtel Uganda has been unveiled as the title sponsor for His Royal Majesty, The Kabaka of Buganda’s 23rd Coronation anniversary. The announcement was made at a colorful ceremony held this morning at the Kingdom’s headquarters in Bulange, Mengo.
The package worth UGX 85,000,000/- is part of a three year partnership and will go toward financing several activities held by Buganda Kingdom during the annual celebration of the coronation.
On 31st July 1993, the Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi was enthroned as the 36th King of Buganda. Every year, the kingdom holds anniversary celebrations to commemorate this day, bringing together thousands of people. This year, the celebrations will be held in Kabasanda, Butambala County on July 31st. Over 10,000 people attended the celebrations at the Lubiri palace last year.
Flanked by representatives from the telecom Company, Airtel Uganda’s Managing Director Mr. Anwar Soussa expressed Airtel’s commitment to working with Buganda Kingdom, calling it “… a partner whose causes are noble and whose benefits extend to a multitude of beneficiaries.”
The newly appointed Anwar also referred to the long-standing relationship between Buganda Kingdom and Airtel Uganda.
“Over the years, we have been part of several initiatives within Buganda Kingdom, including the ‘Twezimbe’ project to the widely popular annual Kabaka birthday run. And with each project, we have seen the benefits of aligning with a Kingdom that is rich in heritage, culture and team work.”
“Our promise is to forge even more ways of working together while continuing to uphold and cement the already- existing relationship” Soussa added.
The visibly happy Soussa was also received into Buganda Kingdom in a special way; being welcomed into the ‘Ffumbe’ clan by Owek. Peter Mayiga who warmly bestowed him with a befitting name; Kisitu.
Speaking on behalf of Buganda Kingdom; Owek. Peter Mayiga; Katikiro of Buganda Kingdom said the celebration of the Kabaka’s coronation anniversary is an event that brings together the people of Buganda to celebrate the Kingdom’s legacy. He also thanked Airtel Uganda for their unwavering support.
“Airtel Uganda has been consistent in their efforts to help our Kingdom achieve several of our key objectives. They are the first telecommunications provider to collaborate with us as we prepare to celebrate our Kingdom’s milestone,” he said.
“What you see here this morning is a Company that has embraced all of Buganda Kingdom; both our people and the activities that make us who we are,” Owek. Peter Mayiga concluded.
Prior to the main festivities on July 31st, prayers to celebrate the anniversary will be held in Rubaga and Namirembe Cathedrals as well as Kibuli and Old Kampala Mosques.
