Kampala, Uganda Aug 28th, 2016- South African Airways, the best airline in Africa, has partnered with enjuba – a social enterprise aimed at empowering people to reach their full potential to promote literacy in Uganda and beyond through the National Spelling Bee and the African Spelling Bee. This partnership started with South African Airways giving 5 tickets to the Ugandan team, including 3 pupils, Leticia Namwadiko, Kataike Chantal both from Tororo Parents School and Kamoga Rahim from City Parents School to represent Uganda at the African Spelling Bee in Johannesburg South Africa, in July 2016.
The Spelling Bee is an annual Spelling competition conducted in both local languages for P.3 pupils and English and Sign Language for P.4-P.7 pupils. It is aimed at helping children improve their literacy, develop a reading culture, learn key life skills and unlock their imagination. The Uganda Spelling Bee is currently reaches 2,000,000 children in 870 schools across the country.
Yogi Birigwa, the Country Director of South African Airways, Uganda said: “South African Airways encourages young people and learning in Africa to develop world class future leaders.” “Supporting young people to acquire knowledge is an initiative South African Airways is proud to associate with.” She added.
The spelling bee not only provides a valuable educational experience for children, but also allows them to engage in healthy competition. Preparation for the competition is a comprehensive learning process that allows children to learn the definition, pronunciation, and roots of words, which in turn helps them to develop the curiosity to read.
The Spelling Bees helps enhance the children’s vocabulary, helping them gain competency over vocabulary, allowing them to excel at reading and writing. It helps develop a friendly competitive spirit among children, helping them to cultivate friendships and aim for excellence at the same time. At the same time the children develop a keen interest in learning and gives them an opportunity to learn how to handle pressure, control themselves in a tense environment as well as enhance a child’s memory and confidence.
“All Children participating in the Spelling Bee are winners, regardless of whether they win the competition.” Aaron Kirunda, the Chief Executive of enjuba emphasized. “We believe that the journey is the reward and the process of children preparing for the competition makes them winners already.” He added.
“We hope this initiative will help us build confident and intelligent future leaders.” Birigwa remarked.
The Uganda Spelling Bee runs all year round starting with schools signing up and teacher trainings in first term, School Spelling Bees in second term, and Regional Spelling Bees and the National Championship in 3rd term. For the 2016, there will be Regional Competitions in Kabale, Rukungiri, Bushenyi, Masindi, Fort Portal, Arua, Gulu, Lira, Tororo, Masaka, Jinja, and Kampala, climaxing with the National Championship on October 30, at Kampala Serena Hotel, starting at Midday.
