UWA Temporarily Suspends Hiking to Margherita Peak in Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has announced the temporary suspension of hiking activities to Margherita Peak in Rwenzori Mountains National Park, citing safety concerns. The decision follows a comprehensive assessment conducted by the UWA team in response to reports of a crevasse formation in the Margherita glacier.

The suspension aims to ensure the safety of visitors amidst potential hazards posed by the crevasse formation. In light of this, UWA is exploring alternative measures to enhance safety for future hiking expeditions. One proposed solution is the installation of a permanent ladder at a strategic location on the right side of the Margherita glacier. This alternative route would provide a safer passage for hikers to reach Margherita Peak.

During the interim period, UWA encourages visitors to explore other picturesque peaks within Rwenzori Mountains National Park. Notable alternatives include Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Cheptegei Peak on the Stanley Range. These routes offer breathtaking views and unique experiences amidst the stunning landscape of the park.

“We understand the disappointment of those who had planned to hike to Margherita Peak. However, we believe that exploring the other peaks in the park will still provide an unforgettable adventure,” the spokesperson added.

UWA assures visitors that they will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates on the status of hiking activities to Margherita Peak as developments unfold. The authority remains committed to ensuring that all visitors safely enjoy their visit to Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
