The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has issued revised transit guidelines for motorists using alternative routes through Murchison Falls National Park in response to the temporary closure of Karuma Bridge. This update follows extensive feedback from key stakeholders and aims to ease travel disruptions while preserving the park’s integrity.
Effective immediately, UWA has made a key adjustment by permitting buses to use the Kichumbanyobo–Tangi route, a move that will be in place for the next three months, until December 31, 2024. The change is expected to provide added convenience for travellers during this period of restricted access, while maintaining critical safeguards for the park’s wildlife and ecosystem.
Key Guidelines for Bus Transit:
- Operating Hours: Buses are allowed entry between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Access outside these hours remains strictly prohibited.
- Speed Limits: The speed limit of 40 km/h within the park will be strictly enforced for the safety of both passengers and wildlife.
- No Littering: Bus operators are responsible for ensuring that passengers do not litter the park. Any littering incident will attract a fine of UGX 100,000, and operators are expected to maintain cleanliness within their vehicles.
- No Unnecessary Stops: Stopping within the park is only allowed in cases of emergency. Unnecessary stops are prohibited to minimize disruption to wildlife.
UWA emphasized that the revised guidelines are designed to balance accessibility with conservation efforts, ensuring that the park remains a protected sanctuary for Uganda’s natural heritage. The organization remains committed to minimizing the impact of heavy traffic while facilitating smooth transit for tourists and locals alike during the Karuma Bridge closure.
“We appreciate the cooperation of all motorists and bus operators during this period. Together, we can protect Uganda’s wildlife while offering a seamless experience for visitors exploring the park,” the UWA statement read.
