For 35 years, SNV Uganda has been at the forefront of driving sustainable development, profoundly impacting the lives of millions of Ugandans. Established in 1989, SNV’s journey in Uganda started with a commitment to community-driven development and has since evolved into a legacy of systemic change across the agriculture, energy, and water sectors.
Reflecting on SNV’s 35-year journey, SNV Uganda Country Director, Ms Phomolo Maphosa, added: “Our story in Uganda began with a commitment to community-driven development. Over the decades, we have grown from addressing immediate needs to catalysing systemic change across agri-food, energy, and water sectors. Today, we celebrate this legacy with a bold vision for the future.” SNV’s 2030 strategy will prioritise gender equality, climate resilience, and strong governance. By integrating these themes, SNV aims to deliver sustainable solutions to interconnected challenges and drive systemic transformation.
This vision materialized in the launch of two transformative projects.
Innovations Against Poverty (IAP) Programme – Phase III:
Supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), this UGX 3.8 billion initiative introduces a fund to foster inclusive businesses. By offering grants of up to UGX 800 million (approximately €200,000) to innovative enterprises, IAP aims to scale solutions for underserved communities and bridge economic disparities.
Inclusive Livestock Development for Smallholder Farmers (INCLUDE):
Funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Uganda, the UGX 67.7 billion (€17.2 million) INCLUDE project targets 75,000 smallholder farmers in 21 districts, including Kigezi, Greater Ankole, Rwenzori, and Busoga regions. This initiative seeks to modernize livestock farming, enhance resilience, and improve livelihoods through sustainable practices.
SNV Uganda’s future is anchored in its 2030 strategy, which prioritizes gender equality, climate resilience, and strong governance. These pillars reflect the organization’s recognition of the interconnected challenges facing Uganda and its commitment to delivering integrated solutions that strengthen systemic transformation.
Gender equality remains at the heart of SNV’s mission, as the organization works to empower women and marginalized groups to become active participants in shaping sustainable communities. In tandem, climate resilience initiatives aim to mitigate the effects of climate change while promoting sustainable practices in agriculture, energy, and water management. Strong governance underpins these efforts, ensuring accountability, inclusivity, and collaboration at all levels.
SNV’s impact extends beyond Uganda. It leverages 60 years of global expertise and a team of approximately 1,600 professionals working in African and Asian countries. Rooted in the communities it serves, SNV has consistently strengthened capacities and catalyzed partnerships that transform agri-food systems, energy access, and water management.
This achievement portrays a dedication to sustainable development. As Uganda continues to navigate challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, and economic inequality, SNV’s role as a catalyst for innovation and systemic change has never been more crucial.
The UGX 71.5 billion commitment to inclusive growth through the IAP and INCLUDE projects exemplifies SNV Uganda’s approach to tackling complex challenges with transformative solutions. By fostering partnerships and scaling innovations, SNV is paving the way for a future where every Ugandan can thrive in a sustainable and equitable environment.
As SNV celebrates 35 years of impact, the organization’s legacy inspires what is possible when dedication, innovation, and community-driven development converge. With its eyes set on 2030, SNV Uganda remains a reliable partner in creating a better tomorrow for generations to come.
