Uganda Airlines, the national carrier, is celebrating five years of service with a forward-thinking initiative aimed at enhancing aviation safety and environmental conservation. The Flight Path Sustainability Project, unveiled as part of the airline’s fifth anniversary celebrations, seeks to address aviation risks and protect the natural environment around Entebbe International Airport and Lake Victoria.
The project is a comprehensive waste management initiative designed to mitigate the dangers posed by bird strikes—an issue affecting aircraft safety during landing and takeoff. Birds, often attracted to Lake Victoria’s fish-rich waters, pose a significant hazard by colliding with aircraft engines and windscreens, potentially causing accidents.
Jenifer Bamuturaki, CEO of Uganda Airlines, underlined the urgency of addressing bird strikes, recalling her own experience in the aviation industry. “I remember working for an airline where a bird strike caused serious engine damage. At Uganda Airlines, we’ve had six bird strikes since we launched operations,” she noted.
The airline’s proactive approach began in 2022 with community engagement and brainstorming sustainable waste management solutions. The Flight Path Sustainability Project builds on these efforts, aiming for long-term environmental and safety benefits.
“This project isn’t just about managing waste; it’s about creating a safer, cleaner environment for aviation operations and protecting the ecosystem around Entebbe Airport,” Bamuturaki added.
As Uganda Airlines charts its future, the initiative highlights its commitment to blending innovation with responsibility—ensuring not only safer skies but also a cleaner Lake Victoria region for generations to come.
The Flight Path Sustainability Project serves as evidence of the airline’s dedication to sustainability, aligning with global trends in aviation to prioritise safety and environmental stewardship.
