In a significant stride toward enhancing regional tourism ties, over 100 Ugandan tourism stakeholders have toured Kenya’s Coast to explore the region’s diverse tourism offerings. The week-long visit, which commenced upon their arrival at Moi International Airport in Mombasa, marks a vital chapter in fostering mutual tourism growth between the two neighboring nations.

Speaking at the airport, Mombasa Tourism Council Chairman Sam Ikwaye underscored the purpose of the visit:

“We are here to showcase to our brothers and sisters what the Kenyan Coast has to offer.”

The Ugandan delegation is experiencing the unique attractions of Kilifi, Kwale, and Mombasa counties, immersing themselves in the region’s culture, cuisine, and scenic beauty. This initiative forms part of a broader Kenya-Uganda partnership to position the East African region as a unified tourism destination.

From Bush to Beach: A Unified Offering

Building on the success of last week’s Kenya-Uganda tourism conference in Uganda, where over 70 Kenyan tourism players explored Ugandan offerings, this reciprocal visit seeks to solidify the shared vision of both nations.

Jean Byamugisha, CEO of the Uganda Hotel Owners Association, highlighted the importance of collaboration: “Kenya is our biggest source market. We want to firm up partnerships and create coordinated tourism packages.” She emphasized the new joint slogan, “From the Bush to the Beach,” aiming to offer tourists an unparalleled experience of gorilla trekking in Uganda followed by relaxing on the pristine beaches of Mombasa.

Byamugisha also celebrated the ease of travel within the region, noting that her visit to Kenya required only a national ID, not a passport—an example of improved regional integration.

A Multi-Faceted Approach to Collaboration

Beyond tourism, the delegation will engage with Kenyan business leaders and county governments to explore broader economic opportunities. Marketing agencies like the Kenya Tourism Board are also involved, crafting innovative packages to appeal to both regional and international visitors.

Ikwaye emphasized the importance of this cooperation for Mombasa: “This visit is a significant boost as we aim to diversify and sustain our tourism offerings. Strengthening regional and domestic tourism is key to our growth.”

The collaboration is expected to create job opportunities, boost foreign exchange earnings, and enhance the visibility of East Africa’s vast tourism potential.

The ongoing partnership between Kenya and Uganda affirms the power of regional collaboration. By working together, the two nations set a precedent for how East Africa can be marketed as a single, cohesive tourism destination, offering visitors a seamless and diverse travel experience.
