Uganda Rolls Out Third Phase of Digital Registration Plates Initiative
The Ministry of Works and Transport has officially launched Phase Three of the Digital Registration Plates Project, part of the Intelligent Transfer Monitoring System initiative.
According to the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Susan Kataike, the program—managed by Joint Stock Global Security Company—is designed to enhance the safety of lives and property.
As part of the initiative, vehicle owners will pay UGX 150,000, while motorcycle owners will pay UGX 50,000 to replace their old number plates with the new digital ones. A two-year deadline has been set for the transition, after which vehicles without the digital plates will no longer be permitted on Ugandan roads.
“If someone has completed the registration processes with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) and the Ministry of Works and Transport and was assigned a number plate, they are still eligible to use the old plate,” clarified Kataike.
This shift comes after the expiration of the contract with the previous supplier, prompting the URA to embrace a modernized system for enhanced efficiency. Acting Manager for URA’s Eastern region, Jimmy Oluka, described the initiative as a “game-changer,” emphasizing its potential to improve operations significantly.
Since the project commenced in 2023, over 2,100 government vehicles and nearly 12,000 motorcycles have already been fitted with digital plates. The third phase is expected to accelerate these numbers, paving the way for a more secure and efficient transportation network.
Galina Sbalova, spokesperson for Joint Stock Global Security Company, assured the public of the project’s capacity to meet demand. “We are fully prepared to roll out digital plates for all Ugandans within the set timeline,” she stated.
Vehicle and motorcycle owners are urged to adopt the new system promptly to avoid disruptions after the deadline. The Ministry of Works and Transport and URA reaffirm their commitment to ensuring a seamless transition to this transformative technology.
The initiative is set to enhance road safety, streamline operations, and establish a modern, secure monitored transport system in Uganda.
