Ethiopian Airlines and DRC Unveil Air Congo to Strengthen Regional Connectivity and Foster Development

Ethiopian Airlines has officially partnered with the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to launch Air Congo, a newly established national airline designed to significantly enhance air connectivity within the DRC and throughout Central Africa. This initiative marks a strategic endeavor aimed at addressing the urgent need for improved transportation links in a region characterized by diverse geographical and infrastructural challenges.

Air Congo commenced its flight operations in December 2024 with an initial fleet of two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which are modern and efficient, capable of serving short to medium-haul routes. The airline has begun service to seven key domestic airports within the DRC, focusing on promoting accessibility to various regions of the country that have been underserved by air transport.

In this joint venture, the Congolese government holds a 51% majority stake, underscoring its commitment to establishing a national carrier. Ethiopian Airlines, with a 49% ownership, will leverage its extensive experience and expertise in the aviation industry to manage the airline’s operations. This collaboration is not only practical but also strategic, as it aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ Vision 2035 strategy, which aims to develop multiple aviation hubs across the African continent, facilitating greater regional integration.

Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew stated, “The launch of Air Congo represents a pivotal moment in our strategic plan to collaborate closely with African governments to enhance air transport across the continent. This partnership will significantly improve connectivity for the DRC and Central Africa, which will foster a conducive environment for investment, trade, and tourism. Ultimately, we believe this will contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.”

As part of this initiative, several key technical agreements have been formalized between Ethiopian Airlines and the Congolese government. These agreements encompass a variety of operational elements, including aircraft leases, providing comprehensive technical support, and implementing robust systems management. Furthermore, Ethiopian Airlines is committed to strengthening local capabilities by training Congolese nationals as pilots, cabin crew, sales and service personnel, and aircraft technicians. This focus on capacity building is expected to result in job creation and skill development within the local workforce.

The establishment of Air Congo is anticipated to revolutionize domestic air travel within the DRC, a country that faces significant geographical hurdles and has a limited transportation infrastructure. By enhancing air connectivity, the airline aims to support economic advancement and boost regional integration, allowing for smoother movement of people and goods across the nation and beyond. This initiative not only highlights the importance of regional collaboration in improving transportation networks but also demonstrates a commitment to sustainable economic growth and development in Central Africa.
