Airbus has said its delivery numbers in 2020 “demonstrate resilience” against the COVID pandemic, which has zapped cash from airlines and frozen demand for new jets.

The European manufacturer said it delivered 566 commercial aircraft to 87 customers in 2020, which is 34% fewer than the previous year.

“Working hand-in-hand with our customers allowed us to navigate a difficult year,” said CEO Guillaume Faury. “The Airbus teams, customers and suppliers truly pulled together in the face of adversity to deliver this result.”

He added: “Based on our 2020 deliveries we are cautiously optimistic as we look into 2021, although challenges and uncertainties remain high in the short term.”

Faury in April announced an adaptation plan designed to save costs and preserve the business until the market recovers. The plan included a significant reduction in aircraft production rates. The manufacturer also agreed delivery deferrals with a number of cash-strapped customers.

In order to overcome international travel restrictions, the Airbus team developed an e-delivery solution which represented more than 25 percent of the 2020 deliveries, allowing customers to receive their aircraft while minimising the need for their teams to travel.

In 2020, Airbus recorded a total of 383 new orders and 115 cancellations, resulting in 268 net orders. This was a 65 percent decrease on 2019 orders.

The A220 won 64 new orders while the A320 Family won 296 new orders including 37 A321XLR. In the widebody segment, Airbus won 23 new orders including two A330s and 21 A350s.

The Toulouse-based manufacturer had a backlog of 7,185 aircraft at the end of 2020.
