Brussels Airlines Expands Sub-Saharan Africa Routes for Summer 2025

Brussels Airlines is set to enhance its presence in sub-Saharan Africa with its most extensive capacity increase to the region for summer 2025. The airline will operate 56 weekly flights, marking a 10% growth compared to summer 2024.

This expansion fueled by the addition of an 11th long-haul aircraft in June 2025, underlines the carrier’s commitment to strengthening ties between Europe and Africa. Routes to key destinations such as Nairobi (Kenya) and Accra (Ghana) will be upgraded to daily services. Additionally, cities like Banjul (Gambia), Freetown (Sierra Leone) and Conakry (Guinea) will see increased flight frequencies.

Highlighting Belgium’s the long historical and economic ties with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Brussels Airlines will introduce daily non-stop flights to Kinshasa starting in March 2025. This move replaces some indirect services via Luanda, Angola. Reflecting the route’s significance, Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO of Brussels Airlines, remarked:

“Kinshasa is without a doubt our flagship route. The history of aviation in Belgium began almost 100 years ago with the ambition of connecting Kinshasa and Brussels via air. Upgrading this route to a daily non-stop connection shows our commitment to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.”

To streamline services, flights to Luanda will now be operated exclusively by Lufthansa, with three weekly direct connections from Frankfurt.

Brussels Airlines’ long-haul fleet is set to grow to 13 aircraft by 2027, complemented by a cabin refresh across all classes—Business, Premium Economy, and Economy. These upgrades aim to enhance the travel experience for passengers while supporting the airline’s North American routes to New York and Washington, D.C.

Belgium’s colonial history with the Congo has strengthened strong cultural, economic, and political links, positioning Brussels as a key hub for air travel between Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. The enhanced flight offerings aim to bolster trade, facilitate diaspora connections, and promote tourism in the region.

This bold expansion reaffirms Brussels Airlines’ role as a key player in connecting Europe with Africa, bridging continents with increased accessibility and modernized services.
