The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken a bold step in enhancing the Prize Money for the triumphant team in the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be held in Côte d’Ivoire this month. Witnessing an impressive 40% boost, the victorious squad in AFCON 2023 will now claim an astounding USD 7,000,000.
This substantial increase not only injects an exciting dimension into the competition but also underscores CAF’s dedication to raising the status of the tournament and inspiring top-tier performances on the African football stage. As the anticipation builds, teams contending for the title are preparing for an unprecedented showdown.
The runner-up will not leave empty-handed, as their prize money experiences a notable surge to USD 4,000,000. This move by CAF underscores the commitment to acknowledge and reward excellence throughout the competition, ensuring that the efforts of every team are duly recognized.
As the countdown to AFCON 2023 commences, the stakes have risen for the semi-finalists, each securing a substantial USD 2,500,000. Even the quarter-finalists will enjoy an increased reward, with USD 1,300,000 allocated to each of them. The competition not only promises intense matches but also lucrative rewards for teams displaying exceptional skills and determination.
Reflecting on these changes, Dr Patrice Motsepe, the President of CAF, expresses enthusiasm for the positive advancements in Prize Money across various CAF competitions over the past two years. Emphasizing the 40% increase in the AFCON Winner’s prize, he highlights CAF’s commitment to nurturing football development.
Dr Motsepe is confident that a portion of the Prize Money will play a pivotal role in advancing football infrastructure and benefiting all stakeholders involved. Whether supporting Member Associations in administrative endeavors or making a lasting impact on the football landscape, the augmented Prize Money aims to contribute significantly to the growth and success of African football.
