Two years back, a team led by the then Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Prof Ephraim Kamuntu, attended a ground-breaking ceremony to commence the construction of an application hotel at the Uganda Tourism institute in Jinja. Regardless of the short fall in the previously anticipated 12 months of the project’s completion, the three star hotel will finally be officially opened in July this year.
Recently, while officiating at the Institute’s Alumni Association launch hosted in Kampala, Godfrey Kiwanda, Uganda’s State Minister for Tourism commented that construction of the Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (UHTTI) Application Hotel is in its final stages and will be formally opened in July this year.
“The new building is nearing completion (at least 80percent complete) will be available for use by July, I will have to travel to Jinja in two weeks’ time to assess the progress of the work so far,” Kiwanda noted.
Kiwanda also added that the simple details matter a lot to tourists that visit the country.
“Ugandans are well known for their hospitable behavior, but the few spices we add should make us a little different, let’s make our rooms much attractive, employ good chefs, receptionists and hotel maintainers, people don’t come to Uganda for wildlife only. The Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute has added value to our country by producing well-equipped and ready personnel for the job market.”
The project that is co-funded by the World Bank to the tune of $100m (Shs373b) and government $2.5m (Shs9b) awarded the project’s construction contract Roko Construction Limited under the supervision of Arch Design Limited for a duration of one year.
Once completed, the hotel will comprise of a fully equipped, 50-room hotel block, conference hall, a bar, two student demonstration kitchens, training restaurants and a laundry block to provide the hospitality students hands-on experience on modern facilities.
UHTTI is the only Ugandan government institution that deals in hotel and hospitality. The construction of a three star hotel was deemed necessary by government as an avenue to improve the quality of infrastructure with in the tourism industry.
The grand cost of the project is about Shs382 billion for the five components including land administration and management reform, business registration and licensing reform, tourism competitive development, match grant facility and project implementation.
