World Cup Qualifier: Uganda Cranes Edge Past Botswana with 1-0 Victory

In a thrilling FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier, the Uganda Cranes continued their dominance over Botswana with a narrow 1-0 win at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The game, played on Friday, June 7, saw Uganda secure their fourth consecutive victory against the Botswana Zebras, extending their perfect head-to-head record.

The Cranes had entered the match with a solid track record, having won all previous encounters against Botswana. The match kicked off under the floodlights with a sizeable crowd in attendance, eager to see their national team in action. Despite creating multiple scoring opportunities in the first half, Uganda struggled to convert their chances, leaving the scoreline goalless at halftime.

Right back Elvis Bwomono, who plays for St Mirren in the Scottish Premier League, was particularly active, seeing two of his attempts saved by Botswana’s goalkeeper Phoko Goitseone in the 11th and 22nd minutes. Forward Fahad Azizi Bayo came close with a header that went just wide, while midfielder Ronald Ssekiganda’s long-range shot was also denied by Phoko. Uganda’s captain and goalkeeper, Isima Watenga, had a quiet first half, as Botswana’s threats were minimal.

The second half continued similarly, with both teams striving to break the deadlock. The decisive moment came in the 73rd minute when Shaban Mohammed, assisted by Denis Omedi, found the back of the net to give Uganda the lead. Mohammed’s goal sent the home fans into a frenzy, as the Cranes held on to their slender advantage for the remainder of the match.

Botswana’s players, particularly Gilbert Baruti and Kabelo Seakanyeng, put up a commendable fight but were unable to breach Uganda’s defence. The only yellow card of the match went to Uganda’s defender Halidi Lwaliwa.

With this victory, Uganda now sits more comfortably in Group G, bolstering their World Cup qualifying campaign. They are set to face a formidable challenge against Algeria on Monday, June 11, 2024, at Mandela National Stadium. The game, scheduled for 7:00 PM, will be crucial as Uganda looks to further improve their standings in the group.

The Cranes’ ability to capitalize on their chances and maintain a solid defence will be key as they prepare to take on the group leaders, Algeria.

This hard-fought win over Botswana not only extends Uganda’s winning streak but also sets the stage for an exciting and high-stakes encounter against Algeria. Fans and analysts alike will be eagerly watching to see if the Cranes can continue their upward trajectory and move closer to securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
