This years UNDP Elgon Half Marathon underlined the challenges of Sexual and Gender Based Violence and Climate change and this sought for efforts to bring an end to the vice and also work towards the best practices to address climate change that has proved a challenge in the recent years across the entire World.

Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei , the Olympics Champion utilized the marathon and urged Ugandans and the World to put an to SGBV as this is dangerous and has displaced many families and children.

“I implore all men here to respect women and see everyone woman and girl out there as their own sister. We need to collectively fight Sexual and Gender Based Violence in our homes and families as it’s a serious issue that needs to be addressed having recently lost our fellow athlete and Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei in Kenya” he said.

Cheptegei also urged Ugandans to take action on climate change as it’s Goal number 13 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and  calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. It is intrinsically linked to all 16 of the other Goals of the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development Goals”

The Marathon came at an opportune moment as the world gets to commemorate the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence which is a key international moment to call for an end to violence against women and girls as this runs from 25th November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) until 10th December, Human Rights Day.
