Mark Mayambela has signed a pre-contract with SuperSport United but both clubs are keeping mum about the move as they work out the possibility of an earlier move for the mercurial midfielder.
Mayambela had done a deal for next season with SuperSport but could be with them from next week. His current contract with Chippa United was just for one year and runs out in June and he is entitled to negotiate and sign a pre-contract with another club six months before its expiry.
SuperSport and Chippa are now discussing the possibility of a payment for the last six months of this season which will allow the 28-year-old to join his new club immediately.
The 28-year-old Mayambela has had something of an up and down career despite a unique style and amazing ball skill, which have proven a positive factor for Chippa United this season.
He was hailed as potential future superstar when Bloemfontein Celtic first signed him to the top flight nine years ago but he was never able to command a regular place and had problems with fitness, to the extend the club sent him to doctors to better understand why he seemed to be unable to complete a full 90 minutes on the field.
His move to Orlando Pirates engendered much positive publicity and fan support but coaches found him unable to contribute fully to the game, especially when without possession and his confidence sagged as he made only irregular substitute appearances.
At Mpumalanga Black Aces he was sacked for allegedly arriving at training drunk, a charge he vehemently denied.
It was followed by a year in Sweden at Djurgardens where he also impressed fans with his ability but did not leave enough of legacy to be offered a contract extension.
Chippa United revived his career this campaign he has proven his worth again
SuperSport have been masters at snapping up players approaching the end of existing deals from under the noses of complacent employers.
Past gains include Anthony Laffor, Morgan Gould, Lerato Chabangu, Mogogi Gabonamong, David Mathebula, Thuso Phala, Kingston Nkhatha – all signed while their clubs dithered over offering them a contract extension.
