Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is the body responsible for operations of the capital City of Kampala in Uganda. While celebrating World Cities Day, KCCA in partnership with Rotary Club of Kampala Metropolitan, organized a tree planting and sensitization activity along Gadhafi Road in Kampala, an evented hoped to kick start urban forestry in the city.
The exercise was taken on by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka and Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago who led divisional leaders and technical wing staff in a tree planting campaign.
The world Cities Day was celebrated under the theme ‘Adapting Cities for Climate Resilience.’
This day was designated by the UN in 2013 by resolution number 68/239, in hope to promote the international community’s Interest in global urbanization, push forward collaboration of cities to address common challenges as wells as share good practices and opportunities with the view of realizing the ideals of SDG 11, among other objectives.
While speaking at the event, KCCA Executive Director, Kisaka highlighted that KCCA has developed the first online tree directory in Uganda, which is freely accessible to the public on the Authority’s website.
“The agency has also developed the first Kampala Urban Green Infrastructure Ordinance which was passed by the Authority early this year.”
“I am glad to report that due to all these endeavors, Kampala City was recognized as a 2020 Tree City by the Tree Cities of the World program thus making it the first African City to join this international network. KCCA is committed to continuing with this urban forestry campaign beyond today and has continuously dedicated resources towards improving the urban forestry in Kampala,” she added
According to KCCA’s database, there are 328 tree species in the city, with only 20 of these indigenous species. The need to increase indigenous tree species in the city explains why KCCA chose to plant Mahogany in its latest tree planting campaign.
As part of its strategic objective of developing a green environmentally sustainable city, KCCA plans to increase Kampala’s urban tree density to 11 per cent, according to the KCCA Strategic Plan 2020-2025
