In a turn of events, Kenya Airways has announced the suspension of its flights to Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This decision comes as a response to the continued detention of its employees by Congo’s military authorities, despite a court order mandating their release.
As we earlier reported, the ordeal began on April 19, when Congo’s military intelligence detained two Kenya Airways staff members. The grounds for their detention were allegedly linked to incomplete customs documentation regarding valuable cargo. Despite Kenya Airways’ efforts and a subsequent order from a military court, the employees have yet to be freed from custody.
In a statement released by Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka, the airline expressed deep concern over the situation. Kilavuka highlighted the inability to effectively support flights without the presence of essential personnel due to their continued detention. Consequently, the decision to suspend flights to Kinshasa, effective April 30, 2024, was deemed necessary until the airline can ensure adequate operational support.
The impact of this decision extends beyond flight operations. Kenya Airways emphasized its challenges in overseeing various crucial aspects in Kinshasa, including customer service, ground handling, cargo activities, and overall operational safety and efficiency. The plea for humane treatment of detained staff members underscores the gravity of the situation and the airline’s commitment to their well-being.
Acknowledging the inconvenience caused to customers, Kenya Airways assured them that safety remains the top priority. Affected customers were directed to contact the customer excellence team for assistance. The airline also reiterated its cooperation with investigative agencies and government entities in both the DRC and Kenya to resolve the matter swiftly and ensure due process for its employees.
CEO, Allan Kilavuka reaffirmed the airline’s stance on upholding the rule of law and urged compliance with the military court’s directive for the employees’ release. The plea resonates with the broader goal of safeguarding the rights and freedoms of individuals involved while striving for a prompt and just resolution.
The unfolding events between Kenya Airways and Congo’s military authorities underscore the complexities faced by international entities operating in diverse regulatory environments. As the situation evolves, stakeholders closely monitor developments for a resolution that aligns with legal frameworks and mutual cooperation.
