Located in Buikwe District, eastern Uganda, Mabira forest is one of Uganda’s natural wonder dating back in time. The rain forest covers an area of about 300 square kilometres and has been protected as Mabira Forest reserve since 1932.
The forest is famously known for receiving rainfall all year round, having the oldest and realest tree species, having most virgin parts-areas that have never been affected by man’s activities, home to endangered animals and African herbal foleage.
Mabira Forest is the largest remaining block of semi-evergreen rainforest in the Vicoria basin. Mabira has Natural Habitat of 312 species of trees, home of 315 species of Birds, 218 Butterfly Species, 97 Moth Species, 23 Small Mammal Species. The forest has some of the realest butterfly species in he world.
The forest is also famous for aging tree species that span to over 70 years of growth. The outer part of the forest consist of trees which are about 25 years old – a result of illegal logging and clearings from communities living outside the forest. Some of the tree species found in Mabira forest are endemic to the Congo- Guinea forests such as;Lophocebus Ugandae, Mulgus Nigris capularis, Teochocercus niten, Macrosphenus Concolor and Francolinus nahani among others.
This beautiful and serene rainforest is a rain catchment for areas supplying Ssezibwa and Nile Rivers. The magnificent trees, Plants, Flowers, Birds, Butterflies, Monkeys and small mammals make this a place a great get away option. It’s the best place to go for a nature walk, camping, biking, bird watching; you could even have an epic picnic in the forest. The forest is rarely if ever, crowded so you can enjoy whatever activities you choose to do in peace.

The forest also has a good number of trails that tourists can use and come across wild animals like duikers, bush pigs, grey cheeked Mangebay, baboon, colobus monkeys, fruit tailed bat and red tailed monkey not forgetting over 90 moth species.
