Toni-Ann Singh, a Jamaican was over the weekend crowned Miss World. The 23-year-old student was born in St Thomas, Jamaica, and plans to study medicine and become a doctor. She beat 111 other contestants representing different countries, to be the fourth Jamaican winner of the title ever since the competition began.

In her tweet shortly after the great achievement, she said that; To that little girl in St. Thomas, Jamaica and all the girls around the world – please believe in yourself. Please know that you are worthy and capable of achieving your dreams. This crown is not mine but yours. You have a PURPOSE.

On glamour lit stage at the Exhibition Centre London, the 23-year-old performed “I Have Nothing” by Whitney Houston adorned in a glittery white ball gown.

Interestingly, when asked by judge Piers Morgan if she would consider a singing career, she said: “If the door is open I’ll walk through it.”

More so, on criticisms that some think the competition is outdated, she replied: “As somebody that has first-hand experience (of Miss World), the biggest part of the competition is Beauty with a purpose, to get things done. I understand there’s criticism, and I’m willing to have a conversation with anyone who would like to.”

In the three weeks leading up to the final, contestants for Miss World 2019 also competed in talent competitions, such as singing, sports, and engaging with fans on social media.

The show was hosted by singer Peter Andre and winner of Miss World 2013, Megan Young.

One of the occurrences that got social media to attention was the reaction of Miss Nigeria, also a competitor for the miss world competition. Nyekachi Douglas of Nigeria was one of the final three for Miss World 2019. When it was announced that Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica won the crown instead of Douglas, the woman happily celebrated for the new pageant queen. Douglas was filmed jumping around and cheering on Singh after the win. Viewers online commended the camaraderie between the two women.
