Busoga Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Dr Joseph Muvawala, alongside his 2nd Deputy, Al-Haji Osman Ahmed Noor, has officially launched the second edition of the MTN-Busoga Masaza Cycling Competition. The announcement was made at the Busoga Kingdom headquarters in Bugembe, with key representatives from MTN Uganda and the Kingdom gracing the occasion.
Flanked by prominent officials including Busoga’s Minister of Sports, Owek. Amin Bbosa, Kyabazinga Affairs Minister, Owek. Yudaya Babirye, Youth Minister, Owek. James Mukembo, and MTN Uganda’s Sponsorship and Events Manager, John Paul Okwi, the event signaled a renewed commitment to promoting sports and community development in the region.
Dr. Muvawala commended MTN Uganda for its steadfast partnership with ObwaKyabazinga Bwa Busoga (OBB), noting that the collaboration has brought meaningful development to the Kingdom. He urged MTN to continue its support, emphasizing the Kingdom’s dedication to fostering sports as a unifying and empowering activity.
“MTN has proven to be a valuable development partner for Busoga. We are proud to work together to inspire our youth and promote community engagement through events like this,” said Dr. Muvawala.
He also called on participants to uphold fairness and discipline throughout the competition, underscoring the importance of sportsmanship.
The Minister of Sports, Owek. Amin Bbosa revealed that the competition will begin with preliminary races from January 18th to February 2nd, 2025. Cyclists from the eleven chiefdoms of Busoga—Butembe, Bugabula BB, Bunha, Luuka, Bukooli, Bulamogi, Busiki, Bunhole Bunhanhumba, Bukono, Kigulu, and Bugweri—will compete in two categories:
- Tipa (Maani ga Kifuba) Bicycles
- Mountain Bikes
Each chiefdom will select four cyclists—two from each category—to compete in the grand finale on February 15th, 2025, at the Kingdom level.
The races will begin in Luuka and Bulamogi on January 18th, proceed to Bukooli and Bunhole on January 19th, Busiki and Bunha on January 25th, Bugabula and Bukono on January 26th, Kigulu and Bugweri on February 1st, and culminate with Butembe on February 2nd.
Prizes and Rewards
Winners at the grand finale will receive substantial prizes:
- Winners (both categories): Brand new motorcycles
- First Runners-Up: UGX 2 million each
- Second Runners-Up: UGX 1 million each
- Fourth Place Finishers: UGX 500,000 each
- Fifth Place Finishers: UGX 300,000 each
- Other Participants: UGX 50,000 each
Bukooli and Butembe chiefdoms, winners of the 2022 Tipa and Mountain Bike categories respectively, are expected to defend their titles.
Under the theme “Men Are the Pillars,” this year’s competition aims to inspire men and boys to take a leading role in combating teenage pregnancies, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to addressing critical social challenges.
Al-Haji Osman Ahmed Noor extended gratitude to MTN Uganda for its support of OBB’s initiatives, noting that such partnerships significantly impact the lives of people in the region.
