The event was officially opened by the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, Hon. Col. Tom Butime, who emphasized the importance of intensifying efforts to ensure the sector reaches its full potential. During his opening remarks, Hon. Butime reiterated the vital role tourism and wildlife play in Uganda’s economic development, stating that the success of the sector heavily relies on collaboration between management teams and the agency boards.

“Our mandate is to harness the full potential of tourism to contribute meaningfully to Uganda’s national economy,” said Hon. Butime. He noted the sector’s significant contributions, including job creation, foreign exchange earnings, and livelihood improvements, particularly for communities around protected areas. He encouraged participants to embrace both the opportunities and challenges ahead to fulfil their responsibilities effectively.

The Minister stressed the importance of adopting an integrated approach to achieving sector goals. He highlighted the need for collaboration between government agencies, the private sector, and local communities to drive progress. Hon. Butime also called for increased innovation, particularly in digital marketing for tourism, and improved infrastructure to support growing tourist numbers.

“We’ve made commendable progress so far, but we must stay focused on long-term sustainability. We need to preserve our natural and cultural heritage for future generations,” he added, urging stakeholders not to become complacent.

Over the four days, participants will engage in strategic discussions and presentations that will help shape the ministry’s agenda for the coming year. A key focus will be reviewing the sector’s overall performance and addressing challenges encountered during the implementation of planned activities.

The retreat is being facilitated by Inspired Leaders International, a consultancy firm renowned for leadership development and strategic facilitation. This gathering marks an essential step in Uganda’s efforts to remain a competitive and sustainable tourism destination, poised for continued growth and contribution to the national economy.
