Over 150 Farmers in Arua Gain Value Addition Skills Under PostBank’s Agri-SME Skills Development Programme

To facilitate trade opportunities across the region, over 150 cassava farmers and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) involved in various stages of the value chain in Arua District underwent a 4-day extensive training as part of the PostBank Agri-SME Skills Development Programme, in collaboration with the Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises (FSME). The training aimed to equip participants with value addition skills.

The training session included 3 days of technical training at Kabia and Sons Millers, where the farmers gained hands-on experience in producing cassava flour, proper post-harvest handling, maintaining quality, and adhering to good manufacturing practices. This approach aimed to enhance the quality of their cassava produce, enabling them to explore regional trade opportunities.

The final day of the training involved a financial literacy session conducted by the team from the PostBank Arua branch. This session aimed to provide the farmers with the knowledge necessary to manage their finances effectively and familiarize them with the agricultural products offered by the bank to support their growth and prosperity.

Kizito Enzama, a Personal Banker at the PostBank Arua branch, representing the Branch Manager, emphasized PostBank’s commitment to promoting prosperity for Ugandans, in line with their new tagline, Grow Prosper. Enzama highlighted the importance of upskilling farmers to transition from subsistence to commercial farming, enabling their products to meet both local and international market standards.

Following the completion of the four-day training, participants were awarded certificates presented by the Resident City Commissioner, Arua Town, Mr. Charles Ichogor.

Mr. Charles Ichogor expressed gratitude for the insightful training conducted in Arua District, encouraging participants to apply the knowledge acquired to improve the quality of cassava products. Furthermore, he commended the efforts of PostBank Uganda and their partner, FSME, for their impactful initiatives, which complement government efforts in the social and economic transformation of the people.

PostBank Uganda, through its Corporate Social Investment arm, launched the Agri SME Skills Development Program in 2022. In collaboration with FSME, the program has provided SME Value Addition and financial literacy training to over 700 beneficiaries across the country over the years. The 2024 program cohort, targeting 300 beneficiaries, was launched in March. Beneficiaries have received training in millet processing in Soroti district, agro-tourism in Fort Portal, and cassava processing in Arua district. The final training, focusing on coffee value addition, will be held in Kampala.
