Almost 18 million passengers travelled through Dubai’s airports last year, which is about 65% less than numbers in 2019.
The emirate’s airports received a total of 17,889,183 passengers last year, according to The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, compared to more than 50 million people in 2019.
Of the 17.8 million people travelling through airports, more than 1.7 million used smart gates, GDRFA said.
Despite the pandemic causing a massive drop in air travel demand, Dubai’s airports have seen an increase in passenger numbers since the return of air traffic in July 2020, according to authorities.
Dubai International, the busiest international air hub before COVID, saw a peak in travel at the beginning of 2021 with around 70,000 passengers departing on 2 and 3 of January.
HE Major General Mohammed Al Marri, director general of GDRFA Dubai, said that the increase of passengers during the New Year period “reflects the increased confidence in the precautionary and preventive measures taken by the UAE to address the repercussions of COVID-19”.
“The reopened of the smart gates at Dubai International Airport for passengers departing from Terminal 3 was an important step, especially at this time,” said Al Marri.
