The much-anticipated Pearl Rhythm Festival is set to make a splash this weekend, October 25th-26th, at the National Theatre Gardens, promising to deliver an unforgettable experience steeped in culture and environmental awareness. With the theme “Taking Turns with the Earth,” this year’s festival aims to shed light on the intricate relationship between art, culture, and climate change, making it not just a celebration of Ugandan sounds but also a platform for important discussions on sustainability.
Over the past 13 editions, the Pearl Rhythm Festival has remained dedicated to promoting Ugandan music while providing a nurturing environment for emerging talent. This year, the festival will not only feature vibrant stage performances from local artists such as Jajja Timo, Kenneth Mugabi, and DJ Nach Mao, but it will also host panel discussions focused on the role of art in protecting the environment.
One of the highlights of this year’s festival will be a one-day symposium bringing together artists, civil society, government officials, and industry stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue about the pressing environmental issues impacting the arts and the broader community.
A notable addition to the festival is a special international collaboration between German and Ugandan artists. This partnership will showcase a four-part voice chorale composed by Hans-Kraus Hübner and featuring lyrics by Stefan Lienemann, culminating in its world premiere performed by a Ugandan choir during the festival. This performance represents a cultural bridge between Altdorf City, the festival’s partner city, and Uganda, exemplifying the festival’s commitment to fostering global connections through music.
The Pearl Rhythm Foundation, established in 2012, has consistently aimed to uplift Uganda’s indigenous music scene. Their mentorship program, Stage Coach Academy, has become a crucial part of their mission, helping to identify and cultivate fresh talent within the Ugandan music landscape. Selected artists undergo a three-month mentorship program, culminating in their performance at the festival, and their best works are featured in an annual compilation CD.
With support from international partners including the French Embassy, the German Embassy, and UNCC, this year’s festival promises immense creativity and a call to action for artists and audiences alike to consider their role in environmental conservation.
