Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi asked the government to prioritise research on cultural values as a way of promoting tourism. Speaking at the Buganda Tourism Expo in Lubiri, Mengo, on Sunday, 1st July, 2018. The Kabaka said cultural values are key to attracting tourists and consequently contribute to national development.
“Many things that connect to culture, language and behaviour can generate income through tourism if well organised and prioritised in the government budget. We think that tourism should start with promoting norms and culture,” he said.
At the expo, the Kabaka toured stalls of agricultural produce, wildlife and artisan work, among others and in reaction had this to say, “What we have witnessed today shows that Uganda, has the resources that have the potential to change lives of our people.”
The Kabaka also launched a new map of the kingdom that shows all its 18 counties. The new map also has portraits of all Buganda’s past kings. The Katikkiro, Mr Charles Peter Mayiga, directed that the new map be raised all over the kingdom buildings. “From today, that is the official map that will be used on all events, including as gifts on introduction ceremonies,” Mr Mayiga said.
