The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, Doreen S. Katusiime, officially handed over a new driver training vehicle and a state-of-the-art customized mobile truck to the Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (UHTTI) in Jinja. The handover took place at UHTTI, with the institution’s Principal, Mr Richard Kawere, receiving the vehicles on behalf of the school.
The vehicle donations are part of the Competitiveness for Enterprise Development Project (CEDP), a Government of Uganda initiative in collaboration with the World Bank. The project, being implemented by the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), aims to strengthen skills development and competitiveness across various sectors, including tourism.
Speaking at the handover, PS Katusiime emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of vocational training, particularly in the tourism and hospitality sector, which is vital for the country’s economic growth. “These vehicles will serve as practical tools, providing UHTTI students with essential driving skills, while the mobile truck will enhance field-based learning experiences. This is a critical investment in the future of Uganda’s tourism industry,” she said.
Mr Kawere expressed gratitude for the donation, highlighting that it would significantly enhance the hands-on learning experience for students. “Our students will now have better access to practical driving skills, which are vital for various roles within the tourism and hospitality industry. The mobile truck will allow us to take training to the field, making learning more dynamic and comprehensive,” he noted.
The customized mobile truck and driver training vehicle are expected to greatly benefit UHTTI’s curriculum by expanding training opportunities, particularly in practical learning areas. The collaboration between the Government of Uganda, the World Bank, and PSFU underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing skill gaps and fostering enterprise development within the country.
This initiative reflects the broader objectives of CEDP, which seeks to improve Uganda’s competitiveness in key sectors like tourism, enhance the quality of training institutions, and equip graduates with the necessary skills to meet the demands of the labour market.
The event marks yet another milestone in Uganda’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its hospitality and tourism sectors, positioning them as pillars for sustainable economic development.
