Uganda’s judicial system has in recent times proven to complement the nations Tourism sector with a recent crack down on fake servicemen within the tourism sector.
Recently, the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Entebbe on 15th October 2021, remanded Mpamu Godfrey Paul to Kitalya prisons until 20th October 2021 on the offence of obtaining money by false pretense. Mpamu had masqaleded as a tour guide and falsely obtained money from tourists to whom he promised to take them to the gorilla park for tracking.
Upon being arraigned before the Entebbe Chief Magistrate Her Worship Stella Akwong yesterday, he pleaded guilty to the charges. He told court that he used a computer and connected with tourists who sent him money to buy gorilla permits but did not secure them.
On August 30th 2021 Uganda Wildlife Authority received complaints from tourists Garcia Grancisco, Gonzalaz Maria, Merino Victor, Yarrow William Harold and Merino David who claimed that they had paid Mpamu Godfrey Paul of WILDPAW SAFARIS Euros 3,000 and US $ 2,000 to secure for them Gorilla tracking permits so as to track gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. They further alleged that Mpamu disappeared with the money and abandoned them in motor vehicle reg. No UBE 360R which he had used to transport them to the park.
On re appearing to court on 20/10/2021, court presided over by her worship Stella Akwong order Mpamu to serve 36 months in prison and pay Ugx. 19.8 million for obtaining money by false pretense. The ruling followed Mpamu’s own plea of guilty.
The body in charge of tourism in Uganda, the Uganda Wildlife Authority expressed concern about this unfortunate incidence and pushed to advise the public to be cautious with people they deal with for tour and travel. The public is advised to always verify with Uganda Tourism Board and Association of Uganda Tour Operators for the authenticity of the tour operators they deal with before extending any payments to them.
