Ruparelia Foundation on the rescue for troubled Chimpanzees

Over the past months, most wildlife protection areas came to light appealing to the public for support over the whelming capacity to look over starving wildlife. Among these was Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary which not only was faced by starving chimps but also rising water levels from the neighboring lake Victoria. Thankfully, the Chimpanzee Sanctuary & Wildlife Conservation Trust (Chimpanzee Trust) has been donated UgShs.10 million from the Ruparelia Foundation.

According to Dr Joshua Rukundo, the received donation will be used to feed chimpanzees at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary which have long faced troubles.

“These funds will go a long way to ensuring the survival of the rescued and orphaned chimpanzees in our care as we navigate the effects of a lockdown brought about by the COVID-19 global pandemic,” Dr Rukundo said in a statement.

However, management later said they did not expect the outbreak to become a pandemic and force total lock down.

“It has taken us by surprise and we find our planning inadequate. The chimpanzees feed on about 2,625 kilogrammes of fruits and vegetables every month, supplied now every 10 days,” Dr Rukundo, said on May 7.

Later on, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary under ‘Feeding the Chimps Campaign’ joined the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) appealing to the public to help in feeding and care of chimpanzees with fresh foods, cereals and games for the isolated staff.
