Tanzania has decided to suspend all Kenya Airways (KQ) passenger flights between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam starting from January 22, 2024. This move by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) comes as a response to Kenya’s refusal to permit Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) to conduct cargo flights between Nairobi and other countries.
The TCAA considers Kenya’s denial a violation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Air Services signed in 2016, particularly Section 4, which outlines reciprocal treatment for airlines from both nations. TCAA Director General Hamza S. Johari explained the decision is based on the principle of reciprocity, emphasizing Tanzania’s commitment to international aviation regulations.
This suspension of Kenya Airways flights is expected to have a significant impact on travelers between the two countries, affecting business, tourism, and family connections. While other airlines operate on this route, losing Kenya Airways’ flights may reduce options and potentially lead to higher fares.
This dispute has been ongoing, with tensions escalating since August 2020 when Tanzania briefly banned Kenya Airways flights due to quarantine restrictions. The situation raises concerns about the future of air travel between Tanzania and Kenya, with potential repercussions for both countries, especially in the tourism and business sectors.
