Following a sharp rise in covid-19 cases over the past fortnight, stringent measures have been reconsidered by the government of Uganda as a precaution measure to scale down the rate of infection and dispersal of the virus.
In a nation-wide speech that was telecast on almost all national televisions and aired on numerous radios, the President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni last evening re-imposed a strict lockdown that included the closure of schools and the suspension of inter-district travel to help counter check the surge in COVID-19 cases in the East African country.
The new measures, which will be effective from Monday morning, include the closure of all educational institutions, some bans on travel, the shutdown of weekly open markets, and the suspension of church services.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) warned of potential airport chaos unless governments move quickly to adopt digital processes to manage travel health credentials (COVID-19 testing and vaccine certificates) and other COVID-19 measures.
03. UK risks increasing isolation if it continues to keep doors closed to international travel: WTTC
The UK risks becoming increasingly isolated if it continues to keep the doors closed to significant international travel, says the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).
The warning from WTTC, which represents the global Travel & Tourism private sector, comes as figures reveal that forward bookings for international flights are lagging far behind the increased capacity generated by extra flights scheduled.
Emirates Airline is helping take the stress out of travel for Ugandans wanting to travel and reconnect to new experiences. The airline is offering special fares to popular destinations, now open for visitors, so they can enjoy their long-awaited summer holidays.
Destinations like Dubai, the Maldives, Seychelles and cities in the US included in the offer require little to no quarantine so holidaymakers can pack for their long-awaited holiday with no stress. The special fares to Dubai in Economy and Business Class also include a complimentary additional piece of baggage.
05. Hotel & Restaurant review of the Week: Speke Resort Munyonyo…
True to the old adage, “he who has not travelled thinks his mother is the best cook.” After wolfing Indian food around Kampala from Khana Kazana, Copper Chimney, Masala Chat, Biryani House, Kyber Pass and Handy’s – I came to a conclusion that a diner who has not sampled the Speke Resort Munyonyo cuisines thinks the others are better cooks.
06. Living in Uganda: All you must know about condominiums
With the current population out burst with in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, much consideration has to be put once one thinks of living around the ‘city of opportunities.’
In Uganda, once you’re looking to buy a home, there are plenty of choices available. One of them is a condominium—a multi-unit property that is divided and sold into individual units. Compared with a single-family dwelling, ownership in a condominium includes partial ownership in shared “common property.” This aspect of a condo represents unique challenges for buyers.
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is massive in Uganda like the rest of the world where it froze social interaction, economic activity and socialization. The only option to curb its spread is to impose rules as fitness freaks continue getting their unique experiences.
“While some people embarked on reading, writing and binging at home , for others wellness became a lifestyle,” says a social critic John Serumaga. “With the gyms closed they went jogging in Mandela Stadium, on highways, nature walking, cycling and mountain climbing.”

08. Guide2Uganda Profiles: Billionaire Sudhir’s real life is stranger than fiction…
He is a billionaire who loves: a Havana Cigar, CowBoy hats, toe pointed shoes, beach wear, posh vehicles and sipping on Johnny Walker with a passion. This is Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia who has a legendary “Midas Touch” in every business he ventures grows by leaps and bounds.
“But contrary to public expectations, it’s not been as smooth as a runway,” confides time hardened Ruparelia. “There was the liquidation of Crane Bank which taught me a lesson to always have a mind that is stronger than my emotions.”
On its heels came the COVID-19 pandemic Lockdown that hit his MICE business, in which he towers, ground to a halt in March 2020. The option was to develop guts of steel and continue navigating his way through challenges encountered.
“Along the way I have encountered and won hearts of: diplomats, intellectuals, politicians, cultural leaders and diplomats,” recounts Ruparelia with nostalgia. “But generally my friends are minced with ordinary mortals, journalists and the business fraternity.”
09. Thinking to travel? What to expect with the current situation
For those considering a return to travel, here is what to expect in the COVID travel era. To be blunt a lot has changed.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 more than a year ago, most of us have not travelled anywhere. As more people start travelling again, airlines are calling back flight attendants and pilots to prepare for a big increase in travel. No one can decide for you when you will start travelling again.
The point of this article is not to tell people what they should/should not do. However, if you are thinking about getting back on a plane (or even just a road trip to somewhere new), I believe you should have the necessary information to make an informed decision that is best for you. If you are considering a trip, here is what to expect with COVID travel.
10. Uganda airlines commences direct flights to Johannesburg-SA
Ugandan national carrier, Uganda Airlines yesterday kick started what many travelers would say is the long awaited route, the Entebbe-Johannesburg direct flights which will be conducted four days a week.
To the traveller’s awe, a return air ticket will cost $341, about sh1.2 million.
Uganda Airlines should now have an edge over Ethiopian, Kenya Airways and Rwandair that fly the Entebbe-Johannesburg route. Although the average price for a return air ticket for the first week of June is lower at $270 , they are not a direct flight like Uganda Airlines is.
