01. Tanzania’s Tourism Sector to reopen amid implementation of tight COVID-19 SOP’s- The United Republic of Tanzania plans to have the Tourism Industry start again bearing in mind the Coronavirus preventive measures. No Tourist allowed to enter Tanzania upon possessing COVID-19. All Airlines to screen Tourists before boarding while all Tourism value chain staff will be subjected to Coronavirus tests and social distancing of one metre to be maintained between staff to staff and staff to tourist. 02. Lake Victoria waters swallowing up Ngamba Chimpanzee sanctuary- The rising water levels of Lake Victoria continue to be a worry to areas around the lake. The lakes water level rose to 14.3cm drowning about 20% of the 100-acre Ngamba Island. The shoreline of the lake has grown narrower and partially immerged the island. 03. Qatar Airways, American Airlines strategic partnership begins with domestic U.S. codeshare- Qatar Airways has revealed that the first stage of the strategic partnership with American Airlines has begun with Qatar Airways placing its code on American Airlines’ domestic flights, strengthening connectivity and creating hundreds of new travel options for passengers. The codeshare will be rolled out in phases over the next few weeks and once completed, will see Qatar Airways’ code placed on over 1000 of American Airlines’ domestic flights connecting with Qatar Airway’s 10 U.S. gateways. 04. EASA/ECDC issue joint guidelines to assure health safety in air travel despite COVID-19 pandemic- The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) issued a joint document defining measures to assure the health safety of air travellers and aviation personnel once airlines resume regular flight schedules following the severe disruption caused by COVID-19. 05. South African Airways rescuers given 25 days Ultimatum to present new business plan-Practitioners on the South African Airways rescue team interested in maintaining the revival of the airlines have been given 25 days ultimatum to formulate a new business plan. The strict deadline comes after the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) deemed their draft rescue plan as unsatisfactory. More details on the story via https://bit.ly/3bRiI5N
06. Emirates Airlines responds to claims of cutting off 30,000 Jobs–Emirates Airline has said that no public announcement has been made yet in regards to claims that the group is planning to cut some 30,000 jobs in a “thorough review” of its costs amid the coronavirus crisis.
Reports earlier claimed that Emirates airline could shed 30% of its workforce, including A380 pilots, so the airline can retire its superjumbos earlier than planned. More details on the story via https://bit.ly/3gdiIjQ
07. Brussels Airlines pilots propose a temporary salary decrease to save jobs- In an open letter, the pilots at Brussels Airlines make a number of proposals to save the airline. Last week, Brussels Airlines – severely hit by the coronavirus pandemic announced a drastic cut in fleet, destinations and workforce where up to 1,000 jobs are at stake including 191 pilots and 470 cabin crew members. 08. Tourism leaders predict a three-year recovery period for the industry- While featuring in an exclusive virtual panel earlier this week, senior personnel within the world’s biggest travel and tourism industry predicted that it might take up to three years for the tourism industry to recover following the economic constraints arising from the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. 09. Emirates Airlines’ SkyCargo Division Facilitates Uganda Export Trade- From January to April 2020, Emirates SkyCargo transported over 2,000 tonnes of cargo between Entebbe and Dubai, including 385 tonnes of food exported to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) alone. The food included chilled fish (Nile Perch), fruits and vegetables, such as, bananas, pineapples, avocado, chilies, hot pepper, white egg plants and sweet potatoes, among others. 10. Rwanda to open borders for international passengers after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted- Rwanda still afraid of opening her borders for fears of contracting Coronavirus which may become an overwhelming issue and danger to the Country’s health system. Travelers to be updated after 15 days on when restrictions are to be lifted as they will have to rebook again at no added cost either through the airline or travel agents.
