01. Rwanda restarts tourism activities as all visitors must test Negative for Covid-19 – Rwanda Development Board (RDB) this week announced the reopening of tourism activities as well as the resumption of international travel for charter flights, effective Wednesday 17 June 2020 considering health and safety guidelines for travelers as a top priority. 02. Tourism in Africa, setting pace for a post-coronavirus Era – At the start of 2020, Africa’s tourism industry was predicted to grow. The United World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), estimated a 3 to 5% increase in international arrivals to the continent as a result of demand for air travel and easier visa processes. Long-Haul Airlines and Super-connectors at risk of connection chaos – Use-it-or-lose-it airports slot rules threaten to break connection services and dampen the recovery of long-haul operators and airlines that rely heavily on connections. That is the warning from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which is urging airports to extend the suspension of 80:20 slot rules into November when the winter schedule starts. Flydubai re-engineers Passenger Journey for Post-Covid-19 Flights – flydubai says it has ‘re-engineered the entire passenger journey’ to meet the requirements and advice of regulators and health experts as it prepares to resume regular commercial services. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a drop in passenger confidence and many people have been put off flying for fear of catching the virus while on-board a packed aeroplane. 05. IATA criteria for COVID-19 testing in the air travel process- The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released criteria for the use of COVID-19 testing in the travel process. Should governments choose to introduce COVID-19 testing for travellers arriving from countries considered as high risk, testing must deliver results fast, be able to be conducted at scale, and operate to very high rates of accuracy. 07. Emirates Airline ramps up frequencies and connections Emirates Airline is adding frequencies on 14 existing routes from July and has announced that it will start flying to 10 more cities, taking its total range of operational destinations to 40. 08. South African Airways’ anticipated revival strategy will cost around $580 million – State-owned South African Airways (SAA) is seeking another government bailout to survive. This time it will cost the government at least $580m in funds, according to the practitioner’s proposed business plan revealed on Wednesday. Brussels Airlines is unsure it can guarantee return flights – Brussels Airlines is currently investigating if it will be able to guarantee return flights for customers, following an announcement that several airlines of the Lufthansa Group are offering such a guarantee to their customers. 10. Africa’s Tourism industry is now the second fastest growing in the World – Jumia Travel – Africa’s Tourism industry is now the second fastest growing in the World – Jumia Travel – Some 67 million tourists visited Africa in 2018, representing a rise of 7% from a year earlier, making Africa the second-fastest growing region when it comes to tourism, after Asia Pacific. African countries are now reaping the benefits from positive policy changes coupled with increased investments in the sector, that have made it a more attractive destination for tourists.
