1. Arua School of Comprehensive Nursing
Coming top of our list is Arua School of Comprehensive Nursing. It is a Government founded health training institution located in Arua District 530 kilometers away from Kampala. The School was established in 1972 to train 20 Enrolled Nurses and 20 midwives. In 2001, the course was converted to Enrolled Comprehensive Nursing Course for the award of a Certificate in comprehensive Nursing, and this has continued up to date. This was in line with the Government policy to train a holistic Nurse in the fulfillment of Primary Health Care goals. The school has continued to rank high especially whenever the annual Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examination Board result are released.
The School runs a two and half years Comprehensive Nursing Program and Midwifery Program leading to the award of Certificate in Comprehensive Nursing and Certificate in Midwifery respectively. The school is affiliated to Arua Regional Referral Hospital for student practice.
2. Butabika School of psychiatric Nursing
Butabika School of Psychiatric Nursing is another reputable nursing school situated in Butabika, Kampala district. The school is the only nursing school in Uganda that trains mental health nurses. Since its inception in 1960, it has trained thousands of nurses who are deployed in Government and private sectors. The school trains both female and male Ugandans and international students pursing the mental health nurses’ course.
Butabika School of psychiatric Nursing offers courses; Diploma in Mental Health Nursing (Direct and Extension) and Certificate in Mental Health Nursing. The school is attached to Butabika National Referral Hospital for clinical and hospital practice.
3. Kabale School of Enrolled Comprehensive Nursing
Since its inception in 1972, Kabale School of Comprehensive Nursing has been offering nursing courses that have seen a number of students graduate as certified nurses. Kabale School of Comprehensive Nursing serves all districts in the extreme southwest of Uganda with a number of students coming in from neighboring countries. The school is affiliated and situated next to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital at Makanga, which offers opportunities for practical application of the studies offered. Students are also sent for practical experience at other public and private health centers in Rugarama, Rushoroza, Hamurwa and Kyanamira, all of which are situated in the nearby neighboring centers in Kabale district.
The school offers a Diploma in Comprehensive Nursing, Diploma in Midwifery and Certificate in Enrolled Comprehensive Nursing all done with utmost professionality.
4. Jinja School of Nursing and Midwifery
Jinja School of Nursing and Midwifery was started in 1954 by the Government of Uganda to support the training of enrolled nurses and enrolled midwives but with the Government policy of phasing out enrolled nurses and enrolled midwives, the school has expanded the curriculum to train Registered Pediatric and Comprehensive Nurses. It is located in Eastern Uganda, Jinja District. The School is a government institution managed under the Ministry of Education of Sports and has maintained its reputation with top performances over the years.
Courses offered at the school include Diploma in Nursing, Diploma in Midwifery, Diploma in Paediatric Nursing and Certificate in Comprehensive Nursing. Students carry out Practical sessions at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, a hospital in the direct neighborhood.
5. Hoima School of Nursing and Midwifery
Hoima School of Nursing and Midwifery (HSNM) is one of the youngest public nursing training schools in Uganda and the only one in the Albertine Graben Region and ranks high due to a continued top reputation since inception. The school was incepted in June 2010 with support from Hoima District Local Government and Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom. In June 2011 it was recognized and taken over by the Central Government under the line Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Sports (MoESTS) there from receiving full financial support as a self-accounting entity. Since its inception, the School has admitted eight sets of students with the cohorts of 66. A two and half (2½) year program of training following the traditional nurse/midwife and comprehensive certificate curriculum is offered. Students are trained in general nursing, midwifery and community nursing. So far, 179 students have graduated with excellent pass rates.
Currently, the school offers a Certificate in Nursing and Certificate in Midwifery course and is affiliated to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for hospital and clinical practice.
6. Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery
Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery was founded in 1955, under the British Colonial Government Policy of training health workers to address and promote preventive, rehabilitative as well as curative care in Ugandan communities. The school started with the training of enrolled nurses, and then upgraded to registered nursing level in 1962. Midwifery started in 1967. The school is one of the top nursing schools and runs under a strong mission statement, “To produce highly competent and motivated nurses and midwives with positive attitude to deliver quality health care services for sustainable socio-economic development.”
Courses offered by the school are; a Diploma in Nursing. (Direct and Extension) and Diploma in Midwifery (Extension and E-learning). Students at the school carry out hospital practice at Mulago National Referral Hospital.
7. Lira School of Comprehensive Nursing
Lira School of Comprehensive Nursing (LSCN) is located in Northern Uganda, Lira District. The school is a nurse training school founded by the government of Uganda. It has been in operation since 1939 under the Ministry of Health (MoH) and now under Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) following reforms in the two ministries. The school is reputable in the region with most of hospital nurses and clinical officers in the northern region having had their courses there.
The school currently offers a Diploma in Comprehensive Nursing, Diploma in Midwifery and Certificate in Enrolled Comprehensive Nursing and is affiliated and located adjacent to Lira Regional Referral Hospital.
8. Masaka School of Comprehensive Nursing
Masaka School of Comprehensive Nursing is a government founded health training institute situated in Katwe – Butego, Masaka district. The school was founded in 1946 to train dressers for X men who were cleaning dressers. In 1966 it started training certificate nurses on enrollment level, but closed due to some un avoidable occurrences. It later revamped n reopened to teach certificate in comprehensive nursing.
Courses at the school include a Diploma in Midwifery (Extension and E-learning), Diploma in Nursing (Extension) and Diploma in Comprehensive Nursing (Direct & Extension). The school is affiliated to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.
9. Public Health Nurses College
Founded as a health training facility, the school continues to train certified medical personnel that have had a great impact on Uganda’s medical sector. The school features on our Top 10nursing schools in Uganda because of its reputable public image and continued excellent performance in the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examination Board examinations over the years.
The school offers courses in Diploma in Public Health Nursing, Diploma in Community Health, Diploma in Nursing (Ext) and Diploma in Midwifery (Ext and E-learning). Students do clinical and hospital practice at Mulago National Referral Hospital and Uganda-China Friendship Hospital-Naguru.
10. Fort Portal International Nurses Training School
Fort Portal International Nurses Training School has provided exciting career opportunities in Enrolled Nursing and Midwifery over the years. The school offers an extensive curriculum that provides students with the most exposure and practice possible in their field of specialty with admissions conducted twice a year. The school is a private Nurses and Midwifery Training School situated in Fort portal Municipality in western Uganda with the mission to train, and produce qualified and highly skilled self-motivated health workers through theoretical and practical training that will serve the international demand for human resource for health and with a heart to love and care for all classes of patients.
