As it has always been the norm in Uganda, the Christmas season always comes along with hiked transport fares as majority of the urban population travel back to their rural homes to check on and enjoy the festives with family.
Normally, when most Ugandans hit the working age bracket, they usually leave their homes to fend for a better future and end up getting to towns and cities where they work all year round with little time to check on their parents and family earlier left behind in their rural homeland.
Therefore, when Christmas time sets in, majority of these people opt to travel back to their families and enjoy the day(s) together.
For this reason, transport companies are always over whelmed around the time. They in turn hike transport fares to reap out of this great opportunity.
However, transport companies explain that the reason they hike transport fares to double or more of the usual cost is because of less people available to travel back to towns. During the season, these companies transport passengers uptown but get less people travelling back to towns which makes the cost of services high thus instill bigger costs on passengers travelling to rural areas.
Yesterday, the United Bus Owners association, a body that heads bus transport companies in Uganda, came out with a set of new prices listed for the public indicating all bus fares to specific routes.
it should be noted that almost all these new fares are double of the normal fares that were changed before December 1st, a month known for overwhelming travel numbers.
