Uganda Airlines, recently acquired bombardier CRJ 900 went on first sky test flight during the past weekend in Montreal, Canada.
This is part of the four previously acquired aircrafts. Government also made payments for two new wide body A330 200 aircraft from the Canadian bombardier Aerospace as they bring back the national airline to operations.
The bombardier CRJ 900 aircraft is said to carry upto 76 passengers, has a maximum weight of 38,329 kilograms at take-off and flies at 830 kilometres per hour top speed.
In May 1976, Uganda National Airlines was started by then President of Uganda, field marshal Iddi Amin Dada. However passenger flights started in 1977 but later on ended in 2011.
Last year, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni said Government was in plans to revive the national airlines in Uganda so as to boost tourism and business.
He added that, the NRM government decided to start the national airlines to stop the outflow of money and to end travel inconveniences to many Ugandan travelers.
‘’We are now finalising on the modernity’s, therefore my dear Ugandans, I can confidently tell you that the future is bright’’ he concluded.
In April 2018, Government signed an agreement with Airbus to start procedures for Uganda airlines aircraft procurement.
The Airbus A330 will facilitate travel as it has the latest technology worldwide and has a 260 passenger seating capacity.
According to Airbus, Uganda will get lessened of the travel burdens when it comes to flights business as Airbus A330 has the lowest risk and operating cost, has a 12% fuel burn, beautiful new cabin, has more range, fuel efficiency and lowest mile cost.
Brussels Airline CEO, Philippe Saeys Desmedt adds that, ‘’One of the most challenge in Africa is airport infrastructure given the fact that Uganda has a good airport and currently improving on it but it’s not the same with several others and luckily, many African governments are investing into new airport infrastructure to make it more safe, make transfer of passengers more easy but also to make sure there are no airport congestions which limits arrival capacities of an airline into the airport.
Most popular operators of Airbus A330 today include; South African Airways, Air Mauritius, Egypt Air and RwandAir.
Research says countries with national airlines develop fast and so Uganda has the highest chances of growth as government revives the national airline. It is said the Airbus A330 costs 259 million dollars.
