A Uganda Airlines Airbus A330 caught the attention of plane spotters Friday last week when it operated an unusual charter flight from Entebbe to Seattle via Keflavik-Iceland.
Uganda Airlines’ AA330-800neo plane, with the registration code 5X-NIL, successfully touched down in Seattle, Washington – the United States. The 8,832 mile (14,214 kilometer) globe-spanning trip took 18 plus hours to complete before factoring in the time spent on the ground in Keflavik.
The arrival of the plane in the USA was noticed by aviation enthusiasts, who were wondering on what mission the flight was on, in Iceland and the USA.
While addressing the press, Uganda Airlines Chief Executive officer Jenifer Bamuturaki said the plane was operating a charter flight. She didn’t say who was on the flight.
“It was chartered. We operated to Seattle. It was a charter, by our client…we do charters by the way. We have been doing it since 2020, after lockdown we started again. We are never at liberty to reveal who our clients are,” said Bamuturaki.
However, local media in Uganda pointed to the Ugandan Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanya who was air lifted to the US for medical innervation.
None the less, a number of critics have zeroed in about his occurence and trash the fact that the speaker’s treatment was top of the agenda for this flight. They argue out that even if it was a last minute resolution, there are still smaller jets that could pull of the operation compared to the 256 A330 seater plane.
Or maybe it was a sign of prestige!
