Uganda Airlines will soon begin direct flights to London, the Uganda High Commission in London has announced. This development marks a significant milestone for Uganda’s national carrier, which has been working towards expanding its international reach.

The announcement came following a recent visit by the head of Uganda Airlines to London. A team led by CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki was in the UK from June 11 to 15, 2024, for meetings with UK aviation authorities, the business community, and the Ugandan diaspora. These meetings were held in preparation for the upcoming launch of direct flights between Entebbe and London.

Uganda Airlines has secured slots for departures and landings at London Heathrow Airport. This follows the acquisition of two Airbus A330-800 Neo aircraft in December 2020 and February 2021. Despite this, the national carrier has not yet made any trips to the UK.

There have been reports that the delay in launching flights to the UK and Europe was due to the lack of an updated certification status from the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority and the European Aviation Safety Agency.

Aviation Development Chief Analyst, James Pearson, recently highlighted the demand for this route. He noted that over 84,000 passengers flew on the Entebbe-London flight on a two-way point-to-point basis in 2019, making Entebbe the second-largest unserved market from Africa to London.

This move to begin direct flights to Europe comes less than a year after Uganda Airlines launched direct flights to Asia and West Africa. On October 7, 2023, the airline commenced direct flights to Mumbai, India, serving this route three times a week. Following the Mumbai launch, Uganda Airlines also introduced direct flights to Lagos, Nigeria.

Uganda Airlines currently operates flights to several destinations, including Dubai, Johannesburg, Bujumbura, Nairobi, Mombasa, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Juba, Kinshasa, Mogadishu, Mumbai, and Lagos.

The launch of the Entebbe-London route, which has been in the works for two years, will be the airline’s 12th destination and its second off the African mainland.
