Also known as World Museums day, 18th May is a day to commemorate the world’s museums and their contribution to the world’s progress. The day is used to celebrate, retrieve and exhibit diverse material of different cultures across the world.
Here in Uganda, the major celebrations took place at the Uganda Museum in Kampala and the event was organized under the theme, ‘The unseen Achieve of Iddi Amin.’
Different materials relating to the former president’s government were showcased to different persons in attendance.
In attendance were different groupings of people from all circles of the world ranging from ministers, students, writers, artists, tourists, journalists, among others.
At the event, a panel discussion involving former culture and health minister Hon. Henry Kyemba, Prof. Edward Rugumayo and chaired by journalists Maurice Mugisha was held majorly debating about the history of Iddi Amin.
Exhibitors at the event included Bank of Uganda which showcased all the former paper notes and coins used during the pre and post-independence era up to date. More so, the bank had some people explaining the barter trade system and how it functioned before the introduction of money.
The Uganda Broadcasting Cooperation (UBC) exhibited some of the equipment it formerly used such as the ‘old’ camera versions used in earlier news rooms and some photos.
Other exhibitors at the event included The New vision group which exhibited some of its original first copy newspaper print outs and other print materials formerly used.
200 of the said 7,000 old pictures of former Uganda’s president Iddi Amin were well captioned and exhibited all over the place for revelers to see, read and appreciate.
The event was commemorated to embrace the life and contribution of the late Ugandan president His Excellency Iddi Amin Dadda and also to enhance and promote Ugandan culture.
