Uganda joined the rest of the world to celebrate the World Wildlife Day on 3rd March, 2022. The event was hosted at Uganda Wildlife Education Centre in Entebbe under the theme ‘Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration’.
While speaking at the event, the permanent secretary Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said that the theme reechoes the need for everyone to recognize the importance of the species and the ecosystem.
“The theme also highlights the need to recognize the ecological, social and environmental benefits that a clue from conserving the key species,” she added.
The celebration is the ninth of the kind since the United Nations Resolution Assembly under resolution 68 proclaimed March 3rd every year as World Wildlife Day on 20th December 2013.
This year’s celebration saw a number of Uganda tourism key players and stakeholders and government officials come together to forge a way forward and re conceptualize wild life conservation efforts.
At the event, HE the Vice president of Uganda, Maj. Jessica Alupo presided over the celebration.
While speaking to the guests, she highlighted that Tourism has been one of the major contributors to the national Gross Domestic product with around $1.7 trillion in 2019 but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, tourism receipts dropped exponentially to $0.5 billion.
“We need to do more by undertaking aggressive marketing, trainning and equipping the people, developing and protecting the attractions and improoving the infrastructure,” she added.
The World Wildlife Day is celebrated worldwide every year on March 3 to raise awareness about the conservation of wildlife.
This year, the event drove debate towards the imperative need to reverse the fate of the most critically endangered species, to support the restoration of their habitats and ecosystems and to promote their sustainable use by humanity.
The day is crucial as climate change and several other factors have posed serious dangers to the wildlife, endangering several species. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, over 8,400 species of wild fauna and flora are critically endangered.
