Uganda’s skies are set for safer travels as Parliament recently approved the Civil Aviation Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2024. This move aims to make Uganda’s aviation rules match global standards outlined in the Convention on International Civil Aviation, also known as the Chicago Convention.
The new law brings significant changes, including the appointment of a chief investigator responsible for looking into airplane accidents or serious incidents within Uganda or involving Ugandan-registered planes abroad. The chief investigator, usually a seasoned expert in aviation, will conduct thorough investigations to find out what happened during these incidents.
Additionally, the law emphasizes keeping investigation details confidential to ensure fairness and accuracy. Moreover, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) gains the power to recognize agreements with other countries, aligning Uganda’s aviation practices with international norms.
For passengers traveling to and from Uganda, this means increased safety measures and smoother interactions with international aviation authorities. The passage of this bill is a long-awaited step towards modernizing Uganda’s aviation regulations and ensuring safer skies for all.
