Kampala, 18th July, 2017 – Samuel Mugarura, a Makerere University Chemistry student who made teargas has made yet another stride in realizing his dream of kick starting the Non-lethal technologies company. Mugarura has acquired a patent for the manufacturing of the tear gas substance from the Uganda Registration Services Bureau. A patent is an exclusive right granted by the government for an invention, which is either a product or process that provides, in general, a new way of doing something, or offers a new technical solution to a problem.
Mercy Kyomugasho Kainobwisho, the director intellectual property Uganda Registration Services Bureau, when addressing the tear gas team meeting on Tuesday July 11, 2017 at the College of Veterinary Medicine emphasized that the patent that was given to Mugarura was known as the intellectual property,a product of the mind and human intellect.
“Intellectual property rights grant the owner of an intellectual creation exclusive rights for exploiting and benefiting from his/her creation.” Emphasized Kyomugasho.
She further encouraged other young innovators to seek legal protection of their new creations if they would like to benefit from their endeavors without battling with `intellectual thieves` that steal other people`s creations on the market.
“I challenge youths out their complaining about Unemployment in the Country to pick a leaf from Mugarura. The Ugandan government is ready to help any young person out there with a good innovation that can steer the country forward.” Said Andrew Mujuni Mwenda, the managing director of The Independent publications.
Mugarura applauded members of the press, government of Uganda, lecturers at Makerere University, Uganda Police and the Uganda Registration Services Bureau for the great assistance rendered to his innovation so far. He opened up to the tear gas meeting that a meeting is slated for him to have a word with the ambassador of South Africa about the tear gas manufacturing.
Byaruhanga Joseph, a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Makerere University warned Mugarura about going slow on money and meetings with high delegates that such could excite him and let go of his secret formulae.
“Tear gas is more of a recipe and trade secret for example the Kentucky Fried Chicken, KFC and Coca-Cola product” Said Byaruhanga.
Byaruhanga further emphasized that KFC has 11 herbs that make their Chicken so delicious but no one knows these herbs. He noted that this was so because they intend to guard this secret that makes them a better brand than others on the market.
Mugarura says that they intend to complete the product development and standardization stage this year and they will then embark on commercialization of the tear gas substance in Uganda.
