In the recently ended North Eastern Region Championship/Etolu Memorial meeting, which was held at Soroti Sports Playground last weekend, Uganda Wildlife Authority, through its athletics club, painted Iteso Land with green and yellow colours.
The Cheetahs began the day with a silver medal in the 1500-metre women’s category, won by Chebet Faith. Then Boch won the 1500-metre men’s race, while Farid came in second. Okwi Eric won with his teammate Rajab in the 100-metre men’s race, as both came 1st and 2nd, respectively. Akol got a silver medal in the 400m women’s category, and again, Eric came immediately from the 100m and took the 400m gold.
In the men’s 5000-meter category, UWA dominated since Cheetahs won every medal. Solimo and Kinga finished second and third, while Eliot won the gold medal. While Kirano competed in the 800m and his fellow countryman Opiny finished third, Rajab again took home the silver in the 200m. UWA won both relays (4x400m and 4x100m).
Odongkara Patrick won gold in the shotput and discussion tossing during the field games, while Rashid triumphed in the javelin competition.
Mr. Hangi Bashir, the UWA communication manager, was impressed upon arrival and to see what had transpired, he had a big smile on his face since his sports rangers had not failed the organization by sailing over to everyone who came their way during the track and field competitions. Through sports, he has inspired them to keep practicing conservation.
