In a bid to protect and preserve Uganda’s wildlife, the Uganda Wildlife Authority [ UWA ] has employed new strategies towards the fight against wildlife crimes.
The Wildlife protection body has reinforced its capacity to handle wildlife crimes by collaborating with other government agencies like Uganda Police, Uganda People’s Defence Forces [UPDF], Uganda Revenue Authority [URA], and the immigration department.
Some of these strategic innervations include the establishment of canine units at Entebbe Airport and Karuma specifically targeting wildlife trade criminals.
While highlighting about these strategies, UWA public relations officer Bashir Hangi said UWA has functional intelligence, investigations, and prosecution units too, that work closely with the law enforcement units.
“Poaching steals from us all because wild animals are one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country. Therefore, when the animals are poached, their number keeps reducing and this affects the experience of tourists. This may force the tourists to visit other countries that have protected such animals and as such Uganda in a way loses part of its tourism revenue, as well as jobs,” he added.
Earlier efforts
Over the years, UWA has patterned with different stake holders in employing different techniques towards the effective fight against Wildlife crime. These continued endeavors have seen a great decline in wildlife related crimes around the region.
