The name DJ Alberto should be familiar unless you are always tipsy whenever you go to club.
The DJ, whose real name is Albert Alipacho, has been spinning discs for the last 28 years, which is why Club Ambiance, where he is a resident DJ, threw him a party last Friday.
For a cold Friday evening after a heavy downpour, there were worries that the turnout would be low. But trust Kampalans with partying; it was a full house. The party was code-named “Black and white”, which was also the dress code.
And a big percentage of guests adhered to it, especially ladies who turned up mainly in white dresses. Several DJs attended the party to show solidarity with their colleague. Club Silk’s MC Percy was the MC. The DJ cut a cake designed in form of a record player. And to enjoy his party, he decided not to do any DJing that night.
WHO IS DJ ALBERTO?
When I met him recently ahead of his party, DJ Alberto surprised me by his calm nature, which is not common of DJs in this town. First, he wasn’t wearing the usual baggy pants; neither did he have rugged hair. He was dressed formally.
Alberto says his first stint at DJing was when he escaped from Makerere College School to the Guild canteen at Makerere University for the Freshers’ ball. This was in 1987 at the event graced by Charles Lubega’s Soul Disco.
“Somehow, I showed a lot of interest in wanting to learn. Lubega gave me an opportunity and his disco was the best in town,” he says.
Like that, he had started his journey to DJing. Whenever Soul Disco had a gig, he would escape from school to go and spin the discs. This left him falling out with his father. But despite that, he never disappointed his father, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from Makerere University.
Upon his graduation, Lubega had opened Ange Noir discotheque where Alberto became a resident DJ. It is here that he became a household name in town. In 2002, he fell out with Lubega over a dispute with a client. He crossed over to Club Silk where he played until last year when he was ‘poached’ by Club Ambiance when it opened its Kampala branch in Bakuli.
“I had to move on because Ambiance came with a better offer, and of all employers, they are the first to ever throw me a party, which they are paying for,” he says.
Lubega didn’t show up but Elvis Ssekyazi, the proprietor of Club Silk, attended. The party went on until the wee hours of the morning.
