World Data Lab and Mastercard Foundation Launch Africa Youth Employment Clock in Uganda to Advance Data-Driven Youth Employment Solutions

World Data Lab (WDL) and the Mastercard Foundation have launched the Africa Youth Employment Clock. This innovative digital tool, unveiled on November 7, 2024, in Uganda, is set to become a game-changer for youth employment insights across Africa, using real-time data to inform policy and drive impactful changes in labour markets.

Uganda, with one of the continent’s fastest-growing youth populations, faces unique employment hurdles. While the overall employment rate remains steady, a large proportion of young workers are in low-wage positions with limited opportunities for economic mobility. Wolfgang Fengler, CEO and Co-Founder of World Data Lab highlights the need for better data to address these issues: “Despite stable employment rates, Uganda’s youth face challenges with low-paying jobs that hinder economic growth. The African Youth Employment Clock provides actionable data, supporting policymakers in creating dignified employment opportunities that foster sustainable development.”

The Africa Youth Employment Clock leverages sophisticated data modelling and visualization, tracking key employment metrics by age, gender, sector, and region up to 2030. Drawing from diverse datasets and peer-reviewed methodologies, the Clock presents reliable, comparable data across African nations. Currently, it covers all 54 African countries with detailed, sub-national data for several, including plans to expand to Uganda. With real-time data at their fingertips, leaders can now pinpoint employment gaps and design strategies to elevate Uganda’s young workforce.

According to Adrian Bukenya, the Mastercard Foundation’s Country Director for Uganda, this launch could be transformative. “Uganda needs real-time, actionable data to create dignified work opportunities for youth. This tool empowers leaders, businesses, and young people to shape a future of meaningful employment. Through this partnership, we aim to unlock the full potential of Uganda’s youth, laying a foundation for sustainable growth and prosperity.”

The Clock’s launch aligns with WDL projections that Africa will experience unprecedented youth population growth this decade, with an increase of nearly 100 million young people by 2030. As Uganda and other nations on the continent grapple with this demographic shift, the Africa Youth Employment Clock promises to be a pivotal resource.
