The Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, alongside its partner agencies on Tuesday, September 10th 2024 officially launched the World Tourism Day 2024 celebrations and the Explore Rwenzori campaign.
The announcement was made at the Fairway Hotel in Kampala, marking the start of an exciting series of events focused on promoting tourism in Uganda.
This year’s World Tourism Day theme, “Tourism and Peace,” underscores the vital role that tourism plays in fostering unity and dialogue among people. The celebrations will take place on 27th September 2024 at Nyakasanga Grounds in Kasese District, with His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the Guest of Honour.
Hon. Martin Mugarra, the State Minister for Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, highlighted the government’s dedication to promoting the tourism potential of Kasese and the larger Rwenzori region. “Kasese is a key hub for tourism with its diverse attractions and activities. Our commitment to this region is evident in the growing number of tourists visiting Queen Elizabeth National Park, where Ugandans make up half of the visitor population,” said Mugarra.
The biggest highlight of the celebrations will be the official launch of the Uganda Equator Monument in Kikorongo, an addition that has already seen a surge in visitors, with around 3,200 people visiting the site within a single week in August.
The campaign aims to elevate Kasese and the Rwenzori region as premier tourist destinations, showcasing its remarkable offerings such as the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kazinga Channel, Lake Edward, Lake Katwe Salt Pans, Kilembe Mines, and the gateway to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas.
Pre-World Tourism Day Activities include:
- Thematic Conference
- Kasese Schools’ Engagement
- Peace Conference
- Tourism Marathon
- Tourism Games
- Medical Camp and Exhibition
- Corporate Social Responsibility events
- World Tourism Day Peace Concert
These activities will take place in Kampala and Kasese, contributing to the Explore Rwenzori domestic tourism promotional campaign.
